Wachenburg, the second castle we visited in Weinheim, was built between 1907 and 1928 by a group of former students, the Weinheimer Senioren-Conven. It is in perfect condition, and houses a restaurant. The castle grounds can be visited free of charge, and provide a fantastic view of the city below.
the castle looks gorgeous. i love the shields on the wall. it reminds me of all the knight stories i grew up obsessed with. for most of my childhood i was hoping for a kid-in-king-arthur's-court kind of experience. oh, and are restaurants in castles a really popular idea there or do you just happen to go to the few that there are? i would love to eat in a meal in a castle.
ReplyDeleteThe restaurants are definitely popular in castles. Nearly all the ruins we've been to have a restaurant, and a lot of them even have a small hotel (if not IN the ruins, then adjacent to them).
DeleteWhen we visited this one, I had no idea it was around 100 years old. It thought it was much newer... Apparently, students hike up the hill to the castle carrying torches once a year for some holiday or something. I read online about it, but it was pretty vague. Anyway, I'll bet that's awesome to see!
What a fabulous castle, you're so luck to live in a place of such beauty! Can't wait to see more posts from you Carrie :)

Thanks, Jen! :)
DeleteWow, that is breathtaking!
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos of the castle and super cute ones of you two!
ReplyDeleteThanks! My only regret is that we couldn't get an all-in-one shot of this castle from the city below...it's so much bigger than it looks!
